Members of the Youth Congress Kripesh and Sharath Lal were brutally attacked and massacred to death in Periya (Kasaragod, northern Kerala) in February 2019. Initially, the CPI (M) disowned the two murders and condemned them . The parents of the two young men later asked the High Court for a central agency investigation, saying the investigation was not on track.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested five Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers in connection with the murder of two Youth Congress leaders in Kasaragod, northern Kerala, two years ago.

Relatives of the central agency said they would be produced in front of a court in Ernakulam on Thursday. One of those arrested is CPI (M) branch secretary K Raju, and the agency has not ruled out further arrests in the case. This is a big setback for the state government which has done its best to block a central agency investigation into the matter. In December 2020, the Supreme Court rejected his plea questioning the CBI investigation.

Members of the Youth Congress Kripesh and Sharath Lal were brutally attacked and massacred to death in Periya (Kasaragod, northern Kerala) in February 2019. Initially, the CPI (M) disowned the two murders and condemned them . The parents of the two young men later asked the High Court for a central agency investigation, saying the investigation was not on track and the government opposed it.

Although the criminal branch arrested 10 people a week after the murder, all local CPI (M) workers and relatives claimed that it was a well-planned murder and that many senior leaders were involved in it. . A week before the murder, CPI (M) had organized a protest meeting in the area and a top leader gave a speech threatening as their days were numbered, their parents said.

Congress and the parents of the two victims welcomed the latest arrests. “The state did its best to contain the CBI and even took enough time to turn over the log of the case. We are sure that poor parents will get justice, ”said party leader Satheesan Pacheni. “We are sure that everyone involved will be held accountable,” said Sharath’s father Lal K Sathyanarayanan. The leaders of the CPI (M) have not yet reacted.

The CBI is already investigating two political killings in northern Kerala in which many top leaders, including former Kannur District Secretary P Jayarajan, were arrested as accused. Thus, the party opposed the CBI investigation, fearing that senior party officials would be recruited again.
