Sahnewal, July 26
The roko rail protest by the leader of the Youth Congress was foiled by Sahnewal Police as protesters were stopped midway as they tried to reach the railway line.
The Youth Congress had planned a roko rail protest against the Law Enforcement Directorate’s summons to party chairwoman Sonia Gandhi in a money laundering case. The protesters set off from Brothers Dhaba towards the railway line, but were stopped by police halfway. Many were taken into custody but were released after two hours.
Barinder Dhillon, chairman of the Punjab Youth Congress, who along with district rural chairman Lucky Sandhu led the protest, said: “This is a clear indication of autocratic and dictatorial rule. The stifling of freedom of speech and expression cannot work in a democratic framework. The attack on opposition parties’ freedom of expression happens daily.
Punjab Youth Congress Secretary General Udayveer Dhillon and All India Youth Congress Secretary Harman Virk were among the protesters to raise their voices against the alleged ‘injustice’ with senior leaders of the left. “Sonia Gandhi, the most senior leader and also a lady, is questioned so shamelessly. We will continue to express our resentment until the government does not stop its harassment tactics of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The protest will now spread to all villages, towns and cities,” the youth leaders said.
Sahnewal SHO Amandeep Singh Brar said protesters marched towards Sahnewal railway line but were stopped halfway. “They were picked up from Sahnewal Chowk and not allowed to reach the protest site. They were detained preventively and later released,” he said.
