Kannapolis Youth Council accepting applications for 2022-2023 school year

KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) — The Kannapolis City Council has created a youth council. The Council’s goal is to create opportunities for students to engage in leadership development, provide secondary school students with ways to volunteer, develop leadership skills, develop high standards of behavior, sharpen communication skills, practice teamwork and have a line of communication for adult leadership in the City’s decision-making process.

The formation of the Youth Council is the result of conversations between council members and local high school students.

High school students who live within the city limits of Kannapolis are eligible to serve on the Youth Council. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on March 31, 2022. Apply online here –

Wherever possible, the Youth Council will represent the geographic and educational diversity of the City with participants from the two public high schools located in the City, students living in the City but attending other public high schools, students from schools in home, charter schools and private high schools.

“We are looking forward to organizing the Youth Council. This is something that was on our wish list and in our conversations with members of our youth population, we thought it was a good time to form a youth council. Our young people are a valuable asset to our city. We want to cultivate their enthusiasm for our city and community and will announce next steps for the Youth Council soon,” commented Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant.

Members of City Council, Mayor Darrell Hinnant and Doug Wilson, and staff members serve as liaisons with the group.
