The YOUTH of Narrabri will soon be able to have more say in the affairs of the county, with the establishment of a dedicated council. Councilors voted to establish a Narrabri Shire Youth Council at the regular meeting in May, to give young people in the community a platform to identify and advocate for the priorities that matter to them. Narrabri Mayor Ron Campbell said young people were often ‘left behind’ in country towns, which would ensure that the council focuses on young people and makes sure they have a say in what they want to happen in the county.
“I’m definitely trying to find things for young people to do and if the youth council contributes to the council decisions and gives us ideas on what they would like to see happen … that is only good,” said Cr Campbell.

The Youth Council will be made up of a maximum of 10 volunteer members aged 14 to 24. The council will have a young mayor and deputy mayor with staff from the Narrabri Shire Council mentoring young members at all meetings.
The board will be launching a call for nominations in early June to become a member of the Youth Council.
Board CEO Stewart Todd is happy the board has reached the point where it can call on youth council members.
