Trinamool Youth Congress leader Saayoni Ghosh arrested for attempted murder

Tripura: Trinamool Youth Congress President Sayoni Ghosh was arrested by Tripura police for attempted murder after her car allegedly hit a passerby.

With that, the brawl between the TMC and the BJP resumed with new vigor. The BJP alleged that Sayoni attempted to mow down the BJP workers during a public meeting.

Congressional sources from Trinamool said that around 11 a.m., female cops came to the hotel where Sayoni was staying and said they wanted to question him. They also wanted to impound his vehicle. According to locals, she was arrested and taken to a women’s police station in West Tripura; and after several hours of questioning, the president of the youth wing of TMC was arrested. She will be presented to court on Monday.

The problems erupted on Saturday night when Sayoni walked past a public BJP meeting to which Tripura CM Biplab Deb was addressing. The TMC youth host laughed at the low turnout at the rally and when someone recognized her she chanted, “Khela hobe” (the game is on).

Sub-division (Sadar) police officer Ramesh Yadav said Ghosh was arrested under sections 307 of the IPC (attempted murder) and 153A (fostering discord between two groups) for her comments against the chief minister.

By the way, TMC National Secretary Abhishek Banerjee is due to hold a rally in Agartala on Monday, ahead of the November 25 municipal ballot.

Criticizing the BJP-led Tripura government, Abhishek wrote: “@BjpBiplab has become so brazenly brazen that even Supreme Court orders don’t seem to bother him. He repeatedly sent thugs to attack our supporters and candidates instead of ensuring their safety! Democracy laughs at @ BJP4Tripura. #NotMyINDIA. “

The Supreme Court recently ordered the Tripura police to ensure that no political party is prevented from exercising their rights under the law, in particular the right to campaign peacefully.

Meanwhile, a delegation of at least 15 TMC MPs will visit the nation’s capital on Monday; they requested a meeting with the Union’s Interior Minister, Amit Shah, to discuss the alleged police violence in Tripura. MPs are also expected to hold a sit-in protest in the nation’s capital from Monday morning.

The TMC delegation is also expected to challenge the president and move the Supreme Court over the attack on TMC executives and Sayoni’s arrest.

TMC West Bengal general secretary Kunal Ghosh said Sayoni had been “illegally” detained by police; he also claimed that false accusations had been made against the president of the youth wing of TMC.

Tripura BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said the TMC “created tensions” during the BJP meeting.
