We need to develop policies that will help us

The South African Youth Council said on Monday that the government must do more to invest in young people and their skills.

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s unemployment rate has now crossed the 35% threshold in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to Stats SA.

At the same time, the broad definition of the unemployment rate fell 0.4% to 46.2% in the fourth quarter.

The South African Youth Council said on Monday that the government must do more to invest in young people and their skills.

Speaking on Afternoon Drive on 702the council’s general treasurer, Kanakana Mudzanani, said the government should look at the policy framework similar to the growth, jobs and redistribution framework.

Mudzanani said South Africa needed to start looking at new policy frameworks that addressed the vast majority of South Africans and their skills.

“We need to stop being a good boy to the global community where financing institutions, such as the World Bank, tell us how we should operate or how we should conduct our economy. What we need to do is study our population, the skills we have in the country and the resources we can use to build a strong economy and derive policy from that that will help us.”
