Workington pupil appointed to British-German Youth Council

A TEEN from Workington has acquired a very special position within a prestigious organization.

Lucy Wilson, who is a 13th grade student at Workington Academy, has been appointed to the UK-German Youth Council after an outstanding candidacy.

The Sixth Former will participate in the co-design of British-German youth activities that support the UK-Germany connection’s strategic plan to increase the number of opportunities available to young people.

Asked about her appointment to the UK-Germany Youth Council, Lucy said: “I am extremely happy that the hard work I put into my candidacy has enabled me to be selected as a member of such prestigious advice. My membership will give me the opportunity to help plan and run initiatives that will help young people engage in languages.

“This field of study, while having brought me a great deal of personal pleasure, is unfortunately both under-studied and widely dismissed as unnecessary.”

Lucy has big plans for her future with dreams of someday getting into diplomacy

She said: “I plan to study German and International Relations at St Andrews, with a year abroad in Germany. After graduation, I would seek to enter the diplomatic service, preferably as part of a government fast-track program, but I will be open wherever my degree, incorporating languages, takes me.

In addition to this fantastic appointment, Lucy is currently excelling in her studies within the academy.

She obtained a grade 9 at the GCSE level and an A grade on her German AS exam this summer. She will take a baccalaureate in German, history, mathematics and other mathematics in 2022.

Academy Director Des Bird said, “This is a fantastic achievement for Lucy, and all of us at Workington Academy are so proud of her.

“Lucy is a fantastic role model for younger students and always goes the extra mile when it comes to studying in all subjects.

“All of her academics praise Lucy’s attitude, determination and intellect.

“I am sure that she will continue to do great things in her chosen field, and I am happy to see that she is aiming high as she applies to one of the best universities in the country. She is an incredible young woman. ”
