Youth Congress protest turns violent in Kottayam

The town of Kottayam witnessed chaotic scenes on Wednesday as a protest march organized by Youth Congress workers demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan following Swapna Suresh’s latest ‘revelations’ in the case gold smuggling has turned violent.

The march, which started from Place Gandhi, was blocked by the police using barricades near the Collectorat. The protesters, however, refused to pay attention and marched towards the district panchayat office.

Amid the chaos, a section of workers led by Youth Congress District Chairman Chintu Kurien Joy jumped the Collectorate compound wall even as a few others broke through the police barricade erected in front of the office of the district panchayat. As protesters staged a sit-in and shouted slogans, police charged at them and several protesters were injured in the ensuing clash.

The drama took a turn when the chairman of the district Congress committee, Nattakom Suresh, and a few senior Congress leaders rushed to the scene and got into an argument with the police. The site was quickly cleared of protesters, who were later released on bail.

Besides the Congress, the workers of Kerala Youth Front, a feeder organization of the Kerala Congress led by PJ Joseph, also staged a protest. Apu John Joseph, Head of Outfit, opened the event.
