Zuma to address post-anniversary celebration hosted by Sanco Youth Congress – SABC News

Former President Jacob Zuma is expected to speak at a post-anniversary celebration organized by the South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) Youth Congress in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal today.

The former president celebrated his 79th birthday earlier this month. The event comes a day after Zuma’s legal team announced his resignation, less than a month before the start of his corruption trial in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

About 200 young people attending the event are dressed in African National Congress and Sanco regalia and sing pro-Zuma songs.

Zuma’s son, Duduzane, is also present.

Duduzane Zuma would not comment on the latest developments in his father’s case.

Mabuza’s lawyers filed a notice of withdrawal with the High Court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

The withdrawal could cause Zuma’s court day to be moved, as he now has to find new lawyers:

Zuma is accused of taking bribes from a French arms company, Thales International, through his financial adviser in order to shield the company from scrutiny. He faces bribery, racketeering, fraud and money laundering charges related to the case.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Appeals ruled that the former president will have to repay the money the state spent on his legal fees.
